Music Academy

The Music Academy program offers an intensive solo and chamber musical experience for young intermediate and early advanced students, as young as 10 years old through college. Each student receives several weekly private lessons, chamber music coachings, music theory classes, Dalcroze Eurhythmics classes, and several opportunities to participate in masterclasses held by our faculty. Students have two hours of mandatory individual practice time as well as student-run group rehearsal time to ensure the most progress is made throughout the program.

Throughout the two weeks, each student chamber group learns a new work, covering topics such as:
ensemble building skills
interpersonal communication skills
rehearsal and practice techniques
meaningful and successful expression of ideas
understanding the uniqueness of individual parts
leadership within the ensemble
stylistic integrity
stage presence
connecting with your audience

All students have the opportunity to showcase their progress in three student performances as well as compete in the RMF Chamber Music Competition, where all parents, friends, and the community are invited to attend or tune in via Facebook Livesteam.

Composition Academy:

Rushmore Music Festival's Composition Academy is an intensive two-week program intended for students ages 13 and up who have an interest in music composition. Held at an inspiring location in the heart of the Badlands of South Dakota, students will experience a learning environment that will encourage them to develop and reinforce their own sense of musical fulfillment and expression. The program is directed by Dr. Symeon Waseen, Associate Professor of Music at Black Hills State University.

Composers of all experiences and backgrounds are welcome to apply; however, some experience in music and a strong grasp of fundamentals is highly encouraged. For two weeks, attendees will receive daily feedback on a compositional project culminating in a performance and recording by Rushmore Music Festival faculty and students in Meier Recital Hall. While working on this project, students will be encouraged to use their own unique backgrounds and strengths while also experimenting with new and unfamiliar modes of musical expression. In addition, students will take part in theory courses and a survey of seminal 20th century music to familiarize themselves with a diverse array of compositional techniques and expand their compositional vocabulary.
